The Height of Fashion
We like to be known for our good work, our good thinking, and the success we help our clients achieve. Today, we are also known for our good sense. Fashion sense, that is.
In a story in today’s Baltimore Sun, Jill Rosen interviews our internship coordinator Mike Fila and intern Alexa Pollokoff about appropriate interns attire.

PRSA Maryland Awards
We avoid clichés like the plague (as the cliché goes) so we would prefer not to begin a sentence with “we are honored…” But we truly ARE honored to have been presented with two Best in Maryland awards this afternoon from the Maryland Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Thanks to the PRSA chapter and the judges for the awards, but equally important, thanks to Sugarloaf Craft Festivals and the Contemporary Museum’s Mobtown Modern music series. It’s easy to win awards when you have clients who trust you, value your opinion, and appreciate your expertise; we are honored that they allow us to produce good, thoughtful (and now award-winning) work on their behalf.

New Work: New Health Center
The Highlandtown Healthy Living Center will be the first LEED-platinum community health center in the country, and will allow Baltimore Medical Systems to significantly increase the number of patients it serves to 22,000 a year – and we are excited to make sure that local and national media know about it. BMS is Maryland’s largest federally qualified health center offering a full range of health services in a supportive, patient-centered environment. BMS is the largest provider of primary health care to the uninsured, Hispanics, refugees and hearing impaired patients in Central Maryland, and serves patients from more than 50 countries.
The Highlandtown Healthy Living Center, at 3700 Fleet Street, includes 52 examination rooms, a pharmacy, dedicated space for community health education, furniture made from recycled materials, and Baltimore’s largest rain garden. The new center is a direct, 32,000 square-foot illustration to the community that there is a connection between a healthy environment and healthy living.

Summer Internship Available
This may be an example of the adage “good things come to those who wait.”
One of our summer interns just called to say he will not be in Baltimore this summer as planned. So, we suddenly find ourselves with a lot of fun, important work, and one less person to do it.
Interns at Himmelrich PR are introduced to the full range of public relations activities, by having experience doing everything we do - promoting shows and events, writing media materials, creating online content, conducting research, working with the media, and arranging promotions.
We are looking for someone who is energetic, proactive, deadline-oriented and professional. And is looking to learn a lot this summer.
Interested candidates should send contact Mike Fila at mike@himmelrich.com. (no phone calls, please)

Veterans Affairs
Himmelrich PR president Steve Himmelrich was one of three panelists at this morning’s Baltimore Public Relations Council meeting. Billed as “Spend the Morning with Baltimore’s PR Veterans,” the presentation quickly turned into a discussion on social media (as do most current media-related discussions). Attendees asked about how to help clients understand the role of social media in a PR plan, tricks and tools for staying current with new applications and media changes, and integrating online media with more traditional public relations tactics. Steve was happy to share how we manage our media operations, and used some of our most recent successes (particularly for the Maryland Science Center and Sugarloaf Craft Festivals) as illustrations.

In Like a Lamb, Out Like a Lion
A new month, a new fiscal quarter, the season and the holidays of renewal, our lucky 13th anniversary – all at the same time, and all good reasons for us to have taken a brief break from our work to realize our March Madness.
In the past 31 days, we were honored to start working with three new clients and renew relationships with three former ones… to help a client top 6,500 Facebook fans… to promote a consumer show (one of the five we promoted this month) that recorded a 28% increase in attendance over last year… to support standing-room-only music and film events… to begin promoting two major fundraising galas and the opening of a first-of its-kind LEED-platinum facility, to create partnerships between our clients and some pretty prestigious national brands…
Life (and business) is good.

Behind the Magic
Today I watched the news (literally) as it happened. Sitting in the WJZ studio, I was surprised at how many elements work together to make a news broadcast successful.
During the studio tour of WJZ - part of my internship at Himmelrich PR - I go to watch a live studio broadcast for the first time.
To my left, two technicians, sat behind computers, a teleprompter, and over 10 small monitors focused on different anchors and feeds. Beyond them, Don Scott reported live in front of a green screen. Straight ahead, Bernadette Woods checked her notes on her next weather forecast, and to my right, Jessica Kartalija waited for the cameraman to cue her next story.
For the latter half of the broadcast, I watched from the control room. Four producers watched a bank of monitors and timers flicking through the seconds of the broadcast. Each of them informed the news anchors, cameramen, and the audio tech of the countdowns until commercial breaks, relayed cues to on-air talent, and evaluated if all the stories prepared could air in the allotted time.
My experience at the studio gave me a new appreciation for the fast-paced, whirlwind environment that news stations thrive in every day to produce what, on our televisions screens at home, appears effortless.
But then again, that’s the magic of television, isn’t it?

“For our clients whether we’re in the office or not”
Himmelrich PR was mentioned in a Baltimore Sun story today about how local businesses are coping with the record snowfall that hit Baltimore this week. “Our productivity is not tied to the physical space of our office,” said Steve Himmelrich. Read the story here.
