Summer Arts (and Media)

Earlier this month, Young Audiences of Maryland kicked off its Summer Arts & Learning Academy (SALA) at eight sites across Baltimore. In this free, five-week program for 2,200 Baltimore City children, artists and classroom teachers collaborate to provide creative and interactive experiences in math and reading.

We’ve come to understand the proven effectiveness of this arts integration approach in stemming summer learning loss, where students lose academic ground over the summer.

And it was heartening to see that local and national media agree on the importance of this program. WYPR’s On The Record spoke with representatives from Young Audiences and Baltimore City Public Schools, WJZ-TV visited Wildwood Elementary to see first hand the joy of learning in students, and Maryland Public Televison’s Direct Connection further explored this issue.

Nationally, the Hechinger Report highlighted the Summer Arts & Learning Academy and Education Dive did the same.
